Kratom & Kava FAQ: 135 Straight Answers From a 10-Year User
Before You Read
This is the biggest, most honest kratom and kava FAQ I could put together after ten years of daily use. A few ground rules so nobody gets misled: KratomPicks is an independent information site, not a medical provider, and none of this is medical advice. Kratom and kava are not FDA-approved to treat, cure, or prevent anything. Where I describe effects, I am reporting what users say and traditional use, not proven outcomes. This content is for adults 21 and older. Talk to a licensed healthcare professional before using kratom or kava, especially if you take other medications or have a health condition. If you are struggling, the free, confidential SAMHSA line is 1-800-662-4357.

Buying & Vendors
Where can I buy kratom online?
Buy from established vendors that are AKA-GMP qualified and third-party lab test every batch. The three I use and recommend are Kraken Kratom, Happy Hippo, and Left Coast Kratom. Buying from a certified online vendor is usually safer, fresher, and cheaper than a gas station or smoke shop.
What is the best kratom vendor?
It depends what you want. Kraken is the best all-rounder and my number one for extracts and variety, Happy Hippo is best for beginners and leaf quality, and Left Coast is the best bulk value. All three are AKA-GMP qualified and lab tested. See the full best kratom vendors ranking.
How do I know if a kratom vendor is legit?
Look for a verifiable business history, AKA-GMP qualification, third-party lab testing with a COA available, honest milligram labeling, and a real money-back refund policy (not store credit with a restocking fee). If a vendor gets evasive when you ask for a lab report, that is your answer.
What is AKA-GMP certification and why does it matter?
It is the American Kratom Association's Good Manufacturing Practices program, a voluntary certification where an independent auditor verifies a vendor's facility, testing, and labeling. It is not a federal requirement, but it is the strongest quality signal in this industry. I do not recommend vendors who lack it.
What is a COA (Certificate of Analysis) and why should kratom have one?
A COA is a third-party lab report showing a batch's alkaloid content and screening for contaminants like heavy metals, salmonella, and mold. It is how you verify what is actually in the bag. Learn how to read one on my COA guide.
Is it safe to buy kratom online?
Generally yes, from an AKA-GMP qualified, lab-testing vendor, and usually safer than unverified retail product. You can check batch lab results, read reviews, and use guarantees. Kratom is not FDA-approved for any use, so buy responsibly.
Is it better to buy kratom online or at a smoke shop or gas station?
Online, from a certified vendor. Smoke-shop and gas-station kratom is often older, unlabeled, untested, and marked up, and it may include enhanced 7-OH products you want to avoid. Lab-tested leaf from a GMP vendor is the lower-risk, better-value option.
How much does kratom cost and what is a good price per gram?
Quality plain-leaf powder runs roughly $8 to $15 per ounce retail, and bulk kilos bring that down to about $0.15 to $0.25 per gram from the vendors I recommend. Prices far below that can mean old or untested product. See my bulk buying guide for a full cost-per-gram breakdown.
Where can I buy cheap or bulk kratom, and how do I buy it by the kilo?
Buying by the kilo is where the real savings are. Left Coast and Kraken both offer kilos starting around $149.99. My bulk kilo guide and buying guide cover who is cheapest per gram and when bulk makes sense.
Do kratom vendors ship to my state?
It depends on your state's legality. Reputable vendors block shipping to banned states at checkout. Check your state on the legality guide before you fill a cart.
What payment methods do kratom vendors accept?
Because many mainstream card processors avoid kratom, vendors often use alternatives like ACH or e-check, certain debit routes, specialty processors, or cryptocurrency. Options vary by vendor and change over time, so check at checkout.
Why can't I always pay with a credit card or PayPal?
Major processors like PayPal generally prohibit kratom, so vendors route payments through specialty processors or alternative methods. It is a processor-policy issue, not a sign the vendor is shady.
How long does kratom shipping take?
Most reputable US vendors ship in about 2 to 5 business days, faster if you are near their warehouse. Many offer a same-day cutoff on weekdays and free shipping over a threshold. Kraken ships free on every order.
Are there kratom coupon or promo codes?
Sometimes, but many codes on aggregator sites are fake or expired. Happy Hippo publishes real public codes (like FIRSTTIME2026 for 25% off new orders); Kraken and Left Coast lean on standing offers instead. My coupon page lists what actually works and names the fakes.
Do kratom vendors have loyalty or rewards programs?
Some do. Kraken runs a points-based rewards program that quietly pays for itself if you order regularly. It is worth enrolling before your first order so it earns points.
Is Kraken Kratom legit?
Yes. Over 15 years in business, AKA-GMP qualified, lab tested every batch, free shipping on every order, and a 90-day refund. It is my number one vendor. Full evidence on my is Kraken legit page.
Is Happy Hippo legit?
Yes. AKA-GMP qualified, consistently fresh leaf, and a foolproof fast/slow labeling system that makes it my top beginner pick. Details on my is Happy Hippo legit page.
Is Left Coast Kratom legit?
Yes. AKA-GMP qualified, in business since 2017, and widely reported to be run by the same Portland operation (PDX Aromatics) as Kraken. Just note that its COAs are request-only and refunds only cover unopened packaging. See is Left Coast legit.
Legality & the 2026 7-OH Action
Is kratom legal?
Botanical kratom leaf is legal at the federal level in the US, and the DEA has not scheduled the plant. It is banned in a handful of states, so it depends where you live. Check the state-by-state legality guide.
Is kratom legal in my state?
Most states allow it, but nine ban it outright and some have local restrictions. My legality guide tracks all 50 states and is updated as laws change.
Which states have banned kratom?
As of July 2026: Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Tennessee, Vermont, and Wisconsin, plus some local and commercial restrictions elsewhere. State laws shift, so confirm on the legality page before ordering.
Is kratom legal federally?
Yes. Botanical kratom is federally legal and uncontrolled. The DEA considered scheduling it in 2016 but withdrew after public and scientific pushback.
Is kratom banned in 2026?
No. The kratom plant is not banned. The DEA's July 2026 action targets concentrated and synthetic 7-OH products only, and it explicitly stated it is not scheduling botanical kratom leaf. Plain powder and capsules are not affected.
What is the Kratom Consumer Protection Act (KCPA)?
The KCPA is state-level legislation that regulates kratom: it typically requires accurate labeling, testing, a 21-plus age minimum, and limits on 7-OH content. Many states have passed some form of it, which is good for consumers.
How old do you have to be to buy kratom?
In KCPA states the minimum is usually 21, and reputable vendors sell to adults 21 and older regardless. Confirm your local age law.
Is 7-OH being banned by the DEA?
Yes. On July 1, 2026 the DEA announced intent to temporarily place high-concentration 7-hydroxymitragynine into Schedule I, with a Federal Register notice on July 6. It targets concentrated 7-OH products, not regular leaf. Full status on my 7-OH tracker.
Does the 7-OH ban mean kratom is illegal now?
No. The DEA specifically said it is not scheduling botanical kratom, only concentrated and semi-synthetic 7-OH products. If you buy plain leaf powder or capsules from a reputable vendor, the action does not touch what you use.
What is the 7-OH threshold in the DEA rule?
The action targets products above roughly 0.05% 7-OH by dry weight, or more than about 1 mg of 7-OH per unit. Natural leaf sits far below that; the rule is aimed at enhanced products. See the tracker for the exact language and dates.
When does the 7-OH ban take effect?
A temporary order can issue after a statutory waiting window (earliest around August 2026) and a temporary scheduling can last up to two years, with a possible one-year extension. Dates can move; I keep the tracker current.
Is kratom a controlled substance?
Not at the federal level. The DEA lists kratom as a "drug of concern" but has not scheduled the plant. Some states control it, which is why legality is state-dependent.
Is it legal to travel or fly with kratom?
It is legal to carry kratom within and between states where it is legal. Avoid carrying it into banned states or across international borders, where laws differ and penalties can be serious. Check both your origin and destination.
Did Tennessee and Kansas ban kratom?
Yes, bans in those states took effect around July 1, 2026. Because state law is the fast-moving part of kratom legality, always re-check the legality guide before ordering.
Will kratom be banned federally?
There is no federal ban on the plant, and the current DEA action is aimed at concentrated 7-OH, not leaf. The FDA has recommended scheduling in the past, but the DEA has not scheduled botanical kratom. Nothing is guaranteed, which is why I keep the tracker dated.
Effects & Strains
What does kratom feel like?
It depends on the strain and dose. Users report that low doses of white or green strains feel like clean, coffee-like energy and focus, while higher doses of red strains feel relaxing and calming. It is dose-dependent and varies from person to person.
What is the difference between red, green, and white vein kratom?
Vein color reflects leaf maturity and drying. Reds are the relaxing, evening colors (red vein guide), whites are the energizing, morning colors (white vein guide), and greens are the balanced middle (green vein guide). Yellow and gold are fermented or blended.
What is the best kratom for energy?
Users report white strains and Green Maeng Da at a low morning dose. Kratom is not FDA-approved as a stimulant. See my best kratom for energy guide.
What is the best kratom for pain?
Users commonly report red strains like Red Maeng Da, Red Bali, and Red Borneo at moderate doses for physical comfort. It is not FDA-approved to treat pain. See my best kratom for pain guide.
What is the best kratom for sleep?
Users report slow reds such as Red Bali, Red Borneo, and Red Sumatra at a moderate dose before bed. It is not FDA-approved as a sleep aid. See my best kratom for sleep guide.
What is the best kratom for anxiety?
Users report green strains like Green Malay and Green Borneo, and mild reds, for a calm feeling at low doses. Be aware kratom can also worsen unease for some people. It is not a treatment for anxiety. See my calmest strains guide.
What is the best kratom for focus?
Users report White and Green Maeng Da and Green Malay at low doses for concentration. See my best kratom for focus guide.
What is the strongest or most potent kratom?
Among plain leaf, Red and White Maeng Da are usually cited as the most potent, but potency depends on alkaloid content and freshness, not the name. Extracts are dramatically stronger per gram than any leaf.
What is Maeng Da kratom?
Maeng Da is a grade or processing term (it loosely means "pimp grade") for higher-alkaloid leaf, and it comes in red, green, and white. It is known for being a bit stronger than average. See the Maeng Da guide.
What is the difference between Bali, Borneo, Maeng Da, and Malay kratom?
These are strain names tied to region or processing, but vein color and dose matter more than the name. Bali and Borneo are classic well-rounded strains, Maeng Da is a stronger grade, and Malay (Green Malay especially) is known for long-lasting effects. See the full strain guide.
What is Green Malay kratom good for?
Users report Green Malay for long-lasting, calm, focused energy, which makes it a popular daytime and work strain. See the Green Malay guide.
What is Red Bali kratom good for?
Users report Red Bali for well-rounded relaxation and evening wind-down. It is one of the most popular and forgiving red strains. See the Red Bali guide.
How long do kratom effects last?
Users report roughly 2 to 5 hours depending on dose and format. Longer-lasting strains like Red Malay and Green Malay sit at the upper end; extracts can feel stronger but not always longer.
How long does kratom take to kick in?
Powder usually takes about 30 to 60 minutes; extracts, shots, and gummies tend to be faster, often 15 to 30 minutes. An empty stomach speeds it up.
Does kratom give you energy or make you sleepy?
Both, depending on strain and dose. Whites and greens at low doses lean energizing; reds and higher doses lean relaxing and sedating. This dose-dependence trips up a lot of new users.
What is the best kratom strain for beginners?
A green strain like Green Malay or Green Maeng Da is a forgiving, balanced place to start, or a Red Bali if you mainly want to relax. Start low and buy from a beginner-friendly vendor like Happy Hippo.
Do kratom strains really differ, or is it marketing?
There are real differences, driven mostly by vein color, alkaloid ratios, and freshness. But the exotic region names matter less than the color and dose. A "40-strain" catalog is often the same base leaf under many labels.
Why does the same strain feel different from different vendors?
Because kratom is an agricultural product. Batch-to-batch alkaloid content, harvest timing, drying, and freshness vary, so one vendor's Green Malay can genuinely feel different from another's. This is why consistent, tested vendors are worth it.
Dosing & Use
How much kratom should I take?
This is not medical advice. Users commonly start around 2 grams and increase slowly to find the lowest effective amount. Low doses tend to energize, higher doses tend to relax. Extracts need far less. Start low, go slow, and use tested product. Try my dosage calculator for general ranges.
What is a beginner kratom dose?
New users often start in the low single-gram range to see how their body responds before adjusting. Everyone is different, so treat your first dose as a test, not a target. This is general information, not medical guidance.
How many grams of kratom are in a teaspoon?
Roughly 2 to 2.5 grams per level teaspoon, but it varies with grind and packing. A cheap gram scale is far more reliable than a spoon and worth the few dollars.
How do I take kratom powder?
Common methods are toss-and-wash (powder in the mouth, washed down with liquid), mixing it into juice, capsules, or brewing it as a tea. Most people take it on a mostly empty stomach for a faster, more consistent effect.
What is the toss and wash method?
You put a measured dose of powder in your mouth and immediately wash it down with a citrus juice or water, sometimes in a couple of small mouthfuls. It is fast and uses no equipment, but the taste is bitter.
How do I make kratom tea?
Simmer (do not hard-boil) your dose in water with a squeeze of lemon for 15 to 20 minutes, then strain and drink. Tea is gentler on the stomach for some people, and the citrus may help extraction.
Should I take kratom on an empty stomach?
Users report faster, stronger onset on an empty or mostly empty stomach, though it can increase nausea for some. A large meal beforehand can delay and blunt the effect. This is general info, not medical advice.
How can I potentiate kratom?
Users commonly cite taking it on an empty stomach, with citrus or grapefruit juice, sometimes with turmeric, and using rest days to keep tolerance low. These are user reports, not proven methods, and stacking effects can also raise side effects.
What can I mix kratom with to mask the taste?
Citrus juice (orange, grapefruit), applesauce, a mango or chocolate-milk smoothie, or a flavored protein shake all help. Or skip the taste entirely with capsules or gummies.
How often can I take kratom, or how many times a day?
The less often the better for keeping tolerance and dependence low. Heavy multiple-times-daily use is the fastest route to needing more for the same effect. Many users keep it to once a day or less and take regular breaks.
Is it better to take kratom in capsules or powder?
Capsules are convenient, taste-free, and pre-measured but cost more per gram and take longer to kick in. Powder is cheaper and faster to adjust but tastes bitter. Many people keep both. See my capsules guide.
How much kratom extract equals powder?
Extract is concentrated, so a small amount can equal several grams of leaf. There is no universal ratio because extracts vary in strength, so start with a very small amount and read the product's labeling. This is general information, not a dosing prescription.
How do I measure kratom without a scale?
You can estimate with a teaspoon (about 2 to 2.5 grams level), but it is imprecise. For consistent, safe dosing, a digital scale that reads to 0.1 gram is strongly recommended and inexpensive.
Can I take kratom every day?
You can, but daily use is what builds tolerance and physical dependence over time. If you use it daily, rotating strains and taking regular days off helps. If daily use has become "I need it to feel normal," see my quitting guide.
What is strain rotation and does it help tolerance?
Rotation means alternating different strains and vein colors instead of using the same one daily, on the idea that it slows tolerance buildup. The evidence is anecdotal, but many long-term users swear by it, and it costs nothing to try.
What time of day should I take kratom?
Users generally take whites and greens in the morning or daytime for energy and focus, and reds in the evening for relaxation. Taking a stimulating white late in the day can disrupt sleep.
Safety & Health
The answers in this section are general information, not medical advice. Kratom is not FDA-approved. If you have a health condition or take medications, talk to a clinician before using it.
Is kratom safe?
Kratom is not FDA-approved, and health authorities note real risks including dependence and, rarely, serious adverse events. Many people use it without major issues by sticking to lab-tested leaf, low doses, and not mixing it with other substances. It is best viewed as a legal-but-sensitive supplement, not a risk-free one.
What are the side effects of kratom?
Commonly reported side effects include nausea, dry mouth, constipation, dizziness, sweating, and, at high doses, "the wobbles." Regular use can lead to dependence. Serious effects are less common and often involve high doses, contamination, or mixing with other drugs. See my side effects guide.
Is kratom addictive?
Yes, it can cause tolerance and physical dependence, especially at high doses and with daily long-term use, and stopping can produce withdrawal. It is generally milder than classical opioids but real. See my dependence guide.
What are kratom withdrawal symptoms?
Users and clinicians report opioid-like withdrawal: irritability, anxiety, muscle aches, runny nose, insomnia, nausea, and cravings, usually peaking a few days in and easing over one to two weeks. My quitting guide covers tapering and resources.
How do I stop taking kratom or taper off?
Many people find a gradual taper easier than quitting cold. There is no official protocol, so involve a clinician, especially if you use heavily or also use other substances. See my quitting kratom guide and the free SAMHSA line at 1-800-662-4357.
Can you overdose on kratom?
Serious harm is most associated with very high doses, adulterated product, or mixing kratom with other depressants like alcohol, benzodiazepines, or opioids. On its own at typical doses it has a ceiling effect, but it is not risk-free, and mixing is genuinely dangerous.
Does kratom damage your liver?
Rare cases of liver injury have been reported in the literature. It appears uncommon relative to how many people use kratom, but it is a real, documented risk. If you notice symptoms like jaundice or dark urine, stop and see a doctor.
Does kratom raise blood pressure or affect the heart?
Kratom can have stimulant-like effects, and there are reports of cardiovascular effects at higher doses. If you have a heart condition or high blood pressure, talk to your doctor before using it.
Can you mix kratom with alcohol?
It is strongly discouraged. Combining two depressant-type substances raises the risk of sedation, nausea, and more serious effects. Do not mix them.
Can you mix kratom with other medications?
Kratom can interact with other drugs, including through liver enzyme (CYP450) effects, and mixing it with opioids, benzodiazepines, or other sedatives is dangerous. Talk to a doctor or pharmacist before combining it with any medication.
Is kratom safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
No. It is not recommended, and neonatal withdrawal has been reported in babies exposed in the womb. Do not use kratom if you are pregnant or nursing.
Is kratom bad for you long-term?
Long-term research is limited. The clearest long-term issue is tolerance and dependence with heavy daily use. Keeping doses low, rotating, and taking breaks reduces that risk, but we do not have decades of controlled data, so honesty means saying the long-term picture is not fully known.
Can kratom cause constipation?
Yes, constipation is one of the most common side effects, because of how the alkaloids act on the gut. Hydration, fiber, and lower doses help.
Can kratom cause nausea or "the wobbles"?
Yes, especially at higher doses. "The wobbles" is user slang for a dizzy, unsteady, hard-to-focus-your-eyes feeling from taking too much. Lowering the dose usually resolves both.
Is kratom a stimulant or a sedative?
It is both, depending on strain and dose. Low doses of whites and greens act more stimulating; higher doses and reds act more sedating. That dual nature is central to how kratom works.
Does kratom interact with antidepressants (SSRIs)?
There is potential for interaction, including serotonergic effects and liver-enzyme competition. If you take an SSRI or other psychiatric medication, talk to your doctor before using kratom.
What happens if you take too much kratom?
Too much usually brings nausea, dizziness, sedation, and "the wobbles" rather than a better effect. The real danger is combining high doses with other depressants. If you overshoot, rest, hydrate, and take less next time.
Can you die from kratom?
Deaths involving kratom are rare and, in the large majority of cases, have involved other drugs, adulterants, or contamination rather than kratom alone. That is not the same as "harmless," so do not mix it and buy tested product.
Kratom & Opioids
General information, not medical advice. If you are dealing with opioid dependence, evidence-based help exists: SAMHSA 1-800-662-4357, or FindTreatment.gov.
Is kratom an opioid?
Not chemically; it is in the coffee family. But its main alkaloids act on the same mu-opioid receptors as opioids, as partial agonists, so it produces some opioid-like effects. That is why it can cause dependence. See my kratom and opioids and is kratom an opioid pages.
Does kratom work for opioid withdrawal?
Many people report using it that way, and surveys reflect this, but kratom is not FDA-approved for opioid withdrawal, the evidence is self-reported, and kratom carries its own dependence risk. Anyone managing opioid dependence should talk to a clinician about proven options. See my kratom and opioids page.
Is kratom safer than opioids?
There is not enough controlled research to make a blanket safety comparison, and I will not pretend otherwise. Kratom acts as a partial agonist with a ceiling effect, but it still causes dependence and carries risks. Treat comparative safety claims skeptically.
Can kratom replace Suboxone or methadone?
Kratom is not an approved medication for opioid use disorder. Buprenorphine (Suboxone) and methadone are FDA-approved, evidence-based treatments that measurably reduce overdose death. That is a decision to make with a clinician, not a swap to make on your own. More on my kratom and opioids page.
Does kratom bind to the same receptors as opioids?
Yes, its alkaloids act on mu-opioid receptors, but as partial agonists, which produces a somewhat different, more limited effect than full-agonist opioids like oxycodone or heroin.
Is 7-OH the "opioid part" of kratom?
7-hydroxymitragynine is a minor alkaloid that is very potent at opioid receptors. In natural leaf it exists only in trace amounts; concentrated 7-OH products amplify it, which is exactly what the DEA is moving to schedule. See my 7-OH tracker.
Can you get addicted to kratom like opioids?
You can develop dependence, and withdrawal is opioid-like. It is generally reported as milder than classical opioid addiction, but it is real, and it is not something to dismiss.
Product Formats & 7-OH Products
What is the difference between kratom powder and extract?
Powder is whole ground leaf: cheaper, milder, easy to adjust. Extract is concentrated alkaloids: much stronger per gram, faster, and pricier. If you use extract, start with a very small amount. See my extracts guide.
Kratom capsules vs powder, which is better?
Capsules win on convenience, no taste, and precise dosing; powder wins on price and how quickly you can adjust your dose. Neither is stronger; it is the same leaf. See my capsules guide.
What are kratom gummies?
Kratom gummies are chewables infused with kratom extract, flavored to mask the bitterness. They are discreet and convenient, and being extract-based they can hit faster, but read the labeling because potency varies.
What are kratom tablets?
Tablets are pressed kratom, either plain leaf or, more often, a concentrated extract standardized to a stated milligram of mitragynine. They are convenient and potent; extract tablets are an experienced-user product.
Are kratom extracts stronger than powder?
Yes, significantly, often several times more potent per gram. That is the whole point of an extract, and the reason you dose them much smaller and use them occasionally to avoid fast tolerance.
What is a kratom shot?
A kratom shot is a small bottle of liquid extract, a single potent serving that acts fast. Quality varies a lot between brands, so buy from a lab-testing vendor with clear milligram labeling.
What is 7-OH and is it the same as kratom?
7-OH (7-hydroxymitragynine) is a potent alkaloid present in trace amounts in leaf. "7-OH products" are enhanced, concentrated versions and are not the same as regular kratom. Those concentrated products are what the DEA is scheduling; plain leaf is not. See my 7-OH tracker.
Is 7-OH dangerous?
The FDA and DEA describe enhanced 7-OH products as an opioid-like public-health concern, which is why they are being scheduled. They carry higher dependence risk than plain leaf. If you want lower risk, stick to lab-tested leaf.
What is mitragynine?
Mitragynine is the primary active alkaloid in the kratom leaf, making up the bulk of its alkaloid content. Most leaf and many extracts are described by their mitragynine content.
Which kratom format is best for beginners?
Plain leaf powder or capsules of a balanced green strain. Skip extracts, shots, gummies, and any "enhanced" or 7-OH product until you know how ordinary kratom affects you.
Are "enhanced" or "extra strong" kratom products safe?
They carry higher dependence risk, and many "enhanced" products are concentrated 7-OH, which now also carries legal risk. For most people, lab-tested plain leaf from a GMP vendor is the safer, smarter choice.
Do kratom gummies work as well as powder?
Effects are broadly comparable, but gummies are extract-based, so dosing and onset differ from loose powder. Check the milligram content per gummy and start with one.
Kava
Kava is not FDA-approved. Effects below are traditional-use and user reports. Avoid kava with alcohol, avoid it in pregnancy, and talk to a doctor if you have liver concerns.
What is kava?
Kava is a drink made from the root of the Piper methysticum plant, used for centuries across the Pacific Islands. Users report a relaxed, calm, sociable feeling without losing mental clarity. See my complete kava guide.
What does kava feel like?
Users report calm, mild muscle relaxation, sociability, and a gently uplifted mood, often starting with a tell-tale numbing or tingling of the mouth. It is relaxing without the intoxication of alcohol.
What is the difference between kava and kratom?
They are different plants. Kava (root) is relaxing and does not act on opioid receptors, and it has a reverse tolerance. Kratom (leaf) acts on opioid receptors and builds normal tolerance and dependence. See my kava vs kratom comparison.
Is kava safe?
Noble kava prepared traditionally from the root has a reasonable safety profile per WHO reviews. Risk rises with tudei varieties, solvent extracts, aerial parts, high doses, and mixing with alcohol or liver-affecting drugs. It is not FDA-approved; avoid it in pregnancy and consult a doctor if you have liver issues.
Does kava damage your liver?
Rare liver injury has historically been linked mainly to non-noble (tudei) kava, poor-quality product, solvent extracts, and combining kava with alcohol or medications. Traditionally prepared noble root is considered lower risk. Choose noble kava and do not mix it with alcohol.
What is noble kava versus tudei kava?
Noble kava is the traditional, cleaner, well-tolerated type reputable vendors sell for daily drinking. Tudei ("two-day") kava can cause nausea and next-day grogginess and is higher in the compound most linked to liver concern. Always buy noble.
What is a kava chemotype?
A chemotype is a six-digit code listing kava's six main kavalactones in order of concentration. The first few numbers predict the character: kavain-forward blends feel "heady" and uplifting, while heavier ones feel sedating. It is the most useful thing to understand when choosing a kava.
What are kavalactones?
Kavalactones are the active compounds in the kava root responsible for its effects. There are six major ones, and a kava's percentage of kavalactones (concentrated instants are often around 40%) indicates its strength per gram.
What is kava reverse tolerance?
Reverse tolerance is a widely reported effect where new drinkers feel little at first, then "break through" and feel the full effect after several sessions, after which they need less kava. It is a user-experience phenomenon, the opposite of how kratom tolerance works.
What is the difference between "heady" and "heavy" kava?
Heady kavas are uplifting, social, and cerebral, better for daytime, and are usually kavain-forward chemotypes. Heavy kavas are sedating and body-relaxing, better for evening and sleep. Balanced kavas sit in between.
How do I prepare traditional kava?
Knead ground kava root in warm water inside a strainer bag (muslin or an aluball shaker) for several minutes, then squeeze and drink the strained liquid. Discard the spent root. See preparation steps in my best kava powder guide.
What is instant kava versus traditional kava?
Instant kava is real kava that has been water-extracted and dried into a soluble powder, so you just stir it into water, no straining. Traditional kava is ground root you knead and strain. Instant is faster and more convenient; traditional is the full ritual experience.
Is kava addictive?
Kava is not considered physically addictive the way kratom, alcohol, or opioids are, and it does not build the same escalating tolerance (in fact it has reverse tolerance). Heavy long-term use can still cause a reversible, scaly skin condition called dermopathy.
Can you drink kava every day?
Moderate regular use is common in kava-drinking cultures. Very heavy long-term use can cause reversible dry, scaly skin (kava dermopathy). Use noble kava, keep it moderate, and avoid combining it with alcohol.
Can you mix kava and kratom?
Some users combine them, but both are processed by the liver, so combining raises the load on it. If you do, use moderation, avoid alcohol, and do not make a habit of high doses of both.
Does kava show up on a drug test?
No. Kava is not screened for on standard drug tests and does not trigger them.
Where can I buy good kava online?
Buy noble, lab-tested kava with clear cultivar and origin labeling. Kraken Kratom carries a solid noble kava line from Vanuatu, Fiji, Hawaii, and the Solomon Islands, including convenient instants. My best kava powder guide ranks them by island and effect.
Storage, Freshness & Taste
How should I store kratom to keep it fresh?
Keep it in an airtight container, cool, dark, and away from humidity and direct sunlight. Stored well, powder holds its potency for a few months easily, and freezing an airtight bag extends it further.
Does kratom expire or go bad?
Kratom does not spoil like food, but it slowly loses potency as the alkaloids degrade with light, heat, and air. Sealed and stored well, it stays good for roughly one to two years. Old, faded, or musty-smelling powder is past its best.
Why does kratom taste so bad and how do I make it taste better?
The bitterness comes from the alkaloids themselves, there is no getting around it in raw powder. Mask it with citrus or flavored drinks, mix it into a smoothie or applesauce, or avoid the taste entirely with capsules or gummies.
